London

We took an early bus from Torquay to London on Thursday, after spending two nights in the Riviera. I had blisters all over my feet (ugh) and was a little worried how the rest of the vacation was going to turn out. I was still walking, though, so that was good :D
After a quick lunch we took the subway (or the tube, as the English call it) to Paddington, where we stayed at the Easyhotel. (a quick word about easyhotel: this was my first and last time there. You'd think that something like free wifi, TV, and cleaning the hotel room is included in the price, but it's not. They charge you extra for everything. Make sure to learn your facts before you book a hotel; I admit, we didn't do much research. Still, am I crazy to think this way?!)

Paddington is a great place to stay in. I've actually never stayed there before, Victoria has always been my go-to place. So here I have two places in London to warmly recommend: Paddington and Victoria. Both are full of hotels, amenities and within an easy and quick access to everywhere via buses and the subway.

Torstaiaamuna otimme aikaisen bussin Torquaysta Lontooseen.
Kaikesta veloitetaan ekstraa. Muista varmistaa tällaiset asiat hotellivarausta tehdessäsi. Myönnän, että tässä menimme vikaan. Silti, olenko väärässä tässä?! Typerää mielestäni)

Paddington on loistava paikka asua.

It was great being in London without the pressure of seeing all the tourist sights. We'd already seen the most. There was still plenty to see, like the market in Portobello Road, Notting Hill. We stopped at the Hummingbird Bakery for some delicious cupcakes (carrot and red velvet) and enjoyed the beautiful day. From Notting Hill we headed to Westminster and walked by Thames. Our plan was to locate a certain café, that sold the most amazing chocolate cake... ten years ago. Needless to say, the café wasn't there anymore, but we did get to recreate a picture of us! :)

London was as amazing as always. It would truly be awesome to actually live there. I enjoy the big city vibe, riding the subway, always having something to do and see... I know the novelty would eventually wear off, but still. I just love London, there's no way around it!

We sat in pubs, met up with some friends, toured, shopped... really had a great trip. So if you ever have a chance, go there. Maybe I'll run into you :) because I'm planning on going back asap!

Torquay

Ten years ago I spent three weeks in the English Riviera, in a town called Torquay, with my friend Minna. Neither of us had been back there in all these years, so when we decided to travel to London, we knew we wanted to go to Torquay as well. And since it was the ten-year anniversary of our language course there, it seemed like a perfect time!

We spent the first night in London, and left for Torquay the very next morning by bus. It's a six-hour drive, and you can imagine our delight when the driver alerted the passengers of the fact that the lavatory is broken. We did get a chance to use a bathroom at a rest stop when they switched drivers, but still... Not being able to drink as much as I needed (and having to sit down for so long) resulted to a swollen ankle.
But, eventually we arrived to Torquay. Minna and I grabbed our luggage and started walking toward downtown from the couch station (mistake there). --> blisters.
We knew our way around, and after a quick look in the map to check our hotel location, we found it.

We were surprised by how familiar everything was. After all, it had been ten years, a decade, since the last time we were there. I think it's because we were so young back then, and it was our first time traveling without our parents, that we just absorbed everything. Every little thing. That summer had such a huge impact on us. I mean, we still remember the bus route from school to our host families'. It's bus no. 31. We hopped on and everything just came back as we rode to our old neighborhood. We got off at the right stop and walked to see where we lived. Nothing had changed.
Afterwards we took the bus back and went to see our school.

Imimme kaiken, jokaisen pienenkin yksityiskohdan, muistiimme. Sillä kesällä oli todella suuri vaikutus meihin. Me muistimme vieläkin bussireitin koulusta kotiin. Bussi nro 31. Hyppäsimme kyytiin ja menimme katsomaan vanhoja kotikontuja. Jäimme oikealla pysäkillä pois ja käveltiin katsomaan taloja, joissa asuttiin. Mikään ei ollut muuttunut.
Jälkeenpäin palasimme bussilla kaupunkiin ja menimme katsomaan koulua.

It was nice to see EF-students all around town! The school has changed its appearance in the last ten years, but it's still the same. <3

It was somehow reassuring to see everything again. It wasn't just some magical period in our lives ten years ago, and then forgotten. It's all still there. It was so wonderful to see the places I've missed so much. Torquay was even more beautiful than I remembered. The whole English Riviera was.
Besides reminiscing we did something new, too. We went to see Agatha Christie's house (a separate post about that to follow). We walked around and relaxed. We watched people go on about their lives. We wondered why so many people had lace curtains.
Obviously, some things have changed over the last ten years, but not too many. Every once in a while, when I would see something I remembered from way back, I would get this funny feeling. It was like 2004 again, and I was fifteen.

Jotenkin oli oudolla tavalla vakuuttavaa nähdä Torquay taas. Sain varmistuksen, ettei kymmenen vuoden takainen kesä ollut mikään maaginen, unenomainen ajanjakso elämässäni, joka sittemmin olisi unohtunut. Kaikki on ennallaan.

Bon Voyage to me!

Hey guys!
Two weeks of vacation behind, two more ahead. I am happy and relaxed. Only slightly stressed due to packing, because tomorrow it's LONDON, BABY! I am sooooo freakin' excited to go, and cannot wait to get there! I love London so much, and it has been a while since my last visit. Lately I've been so preoccupied with everything else I haven't even had time to think about this trip, and it's sort of just hitting me now. I've been slowly packing my stuff for the last few hours and I'm mostly done! :) Only a few more things that will have to wait until tomorrow morning. My flight is at 4.25pm, which is a nice change. I usually find myself flying at inhumane times.. Anyways, most likely I will not be blogging during my trip, but will surely share everything with ya afterwards! Don't forget to follow me on Instagram (@grasshopper89) for daily updates!

Heippa vaan kaikille!
Kaksi viikkoa lomaa takana, kaksi edessä. Täällä kirjoittelee onnellinen ja rentoutunut tyttönen. Ihan pikkuinen stressi päällä pakkaamisen takia; huomenna suuntana LONTOO! Lento lähtee huomenna klo 16.25, mikä on mukavaa vaihtelua.

I chopped my hair a few days ago! Lost maybe 30cm.. But I love it! What do you think? :)

About 100 Happy Days

On April I took part in the 100 Happy Days challenge and yesterday, on the 24th of July, my 100 days were full.
The idea of the challenge is to pick your platform and post a picture of something that makes you happy every day for 100 days. It can be anything; food, friends, places, books, etc. If it makes you happy, post it and share it with everyone! I am happy to report that I succeeded in this and as far as I know I never skipped a day. I posted my pictures on Instagram (@grasshopper89) and also shared some of my thoughts here on my blog. You can find them under the tag 100 Happy Days.

I'm proud of myself for doing this. It wasn't always easy, but I did it, and this certainly reminded me that no matter how awful my day was, there was always something good in it. This challenge made me look for those things. Some days were easier than others. But every day I was happy about something. Not all day every day, but every day. I encourage you all to take part in this, because I really feel it has made a positive difference in the way I see things.

What's Going On, World?

Well, haven't written here in ages... Summer has taken all my time. Work, friends, barbecue, strawberries, ice cream, endless light. Summer is such an amazing time. Especially when one gets to enjoy it to the fullest. Guess who only has three more days of work left until vacation! Sweet freedom starts on Monday, my four-week summer vacation, which I've already almost booked full. I'm having a friend over from Germany, I will be traveling to London and I get to just hang around. You have no idea how much I need a vacay. I will surely update the blog at some point as well, and hopefully by the fall I will get back to regular blogging.
Oh, and I already booked a winter vacation, too (because why not?). Abu Dhabi and Dubai are calling for me in December! :)

No ei ole tänne tullut kirjoiteltua taas aikoihin... Kesä on vienyt kaiken ajan. Töitä, kavereita, grillausta, mansikoita, jäätelöä, loputonta valoa. Kesä on mahtavaa aikaa. Varsinkin, kun siitä pääsee nauttimaan kunnolla. Minullapa on enää kolme työpäivää jäljellä ennen lomaa!

England Calling!

Ah! I am so happy and excited, you guys!
Today I booked a flight to London.
In case you didn't know, I love London.

I haven't visited London in six and a half years. My two-hour layover last December does not count. And being away from a place I love for over six years is just wrong. I am so happy to be going back, even if it is only for a week. London has a special place in my heart, and I can go back any number of times and still feel the first love.

I'm going on this trip with Minna, who is one of my very best and closest friends. And this trip is going to be very special for us, because at the time we will be in England, it will be exactly ten years since the last time we were there together. In the summer of 2004 we spent three weeks in Torquay, South West England, and that journey was what sparked the desire to travel in us. We were just a couple of fifteen-year-olds on a language course, traveling without our parents for the first time. And our hearts were stolen by Torquay in the English Riviera and London. We have both been to London after that first time, but never in Torquay. That's a place where we should go together, and in just two months we will :)

I will most definitely share my trip with y'all, and can't wait to go! I'm so happy to have something this great to look forward to.

Have a happy rest of the weekend! <3

Happy May: New Beginnings!

Hey y'all! :)

In my last post I said I've received some very good news, and I am so excited to share everything with you! If you follow me on Instagram you already know this, but if you don't, then here it is:

I GOT ACCEPTED TO SCHOOL! YESSS!!!

I am so excited about this! I applied on a whim, took the entrance exam with no expectations, and refused to stress about it. I was prepared for any scenario, but when I found out I got accepted to Lahti University of Applied Sciences, I realized how much I had actually wanted it. I will be studying International Business, and this all makes me very happy and I can't wait to start school in September! Well... I can wait. I have the entire summer ahead of me before school starts, lots and lots of happy things! :)

I'm a sucker for office supplies, and can't wait to go shopping for school stuff, including a desk! I will definitely need one now.. My bed is awesome, but not ideal for homework. I'm on the hunt for a new apartment as well, because I simply can't fit a desk into my current one + now that I'll be going to school in the same city I work in, it would make more sense to move there, too, right? (I live 20 minutes away now, so it's not that bad, but still).

And, another month is coming to an end. It's time to say goodbye to May, and embrace June! It's officially summer! Although depending where you are, summer has probably already began a loooong time ago. Here in the north it comes and goes.
The theme for next month is

Jammin' June

Ooooo... Next month will be all about music. I look forward to sharing my favorite music with you guys! :)

Love you, and as always: thanks for reading <3

P.S. I do have one more piece of good news to share, but I am waiting a confirmation on that one. Will keep you updated!

May Favorites

TV & MOVIES

I have all ten seasons of Friends on DVD, and what can I tell ya.. probably one of the best sit coms of all time. My brother was borrowing the DVD box for a loooong time, and I finally got it back. And watched all of the seasons, back to back. I know, right? No life.

MUSIC

Lucy Hale - Road Between

Emeli Sandé - Read All About It

FOOD
We got to enjoy a pretty amazing weather here in Finland. For about a week, and now it's cold again. But anyways, during this weather wise weird week I had six days off (I know, right?!) and I got to enjoy the company of my friends and had a loooooooot of ice cream. Yummy!

MAKE-UP & BEAUTY

Primo Self Tanning face lotion by Dermosil. I've never used self tanning lotions before, and I don't intend to start, BUT, this one only gives your face a light, beautiful summery glow. We're not talking about a strong tan here, just some color ;) For us white people in the North, this lotion is perfect! The result is natural and the lotion doesn't leave any awkward lines on your skin.

BOOKS

I read Lauren Oliver's latest novel, Panic. The plot was absolutely thrilling; young people facing their worst fears in a game that came to be because there was nothing else to do in a small town.

I'm a fan of Oliver's other books, too, and this one wasn't a disappointment either! She has a unique way to depict young peoples' lives. Make sure to check this book out!

I usually prefer to read the book first before I go see the movie, but I admit I hadn't even heard about Divergent until they started promoting the movie. I'm so off the wagon when it comes to YA literature right now... My reading has taken a hit lately, but I'm working on fixing that. So yeah, I went to see the movie and loved it, and bought the book the same day. I'm now reading it and loving it so far. I think I might have to go out and buy the other two books as well :P

These were my monthly favorites from May! What do you guys think? I know there's not much to promote now, but it's been kinda slow. Again. I have received some VERY GOOD NEWS this month, but instead of sharing them in this post, I will be doing a whole separate post about them. Stay tuned ;)

Happy May: Little Things

I've always been the type to get excited over little things. I think it's a quality everyone should possess; learn to enjoy the little things. They come along every day. It may not always seem like they do, but I promise you there's something good in every day.

To me happiness is:

* a good hair day *
* mail that doesn't include bills *
* a text from a friend *
* a compliment (about anything) *
* a good conversation *
* nice memories *
* girl talk *
* making plans *
* a hug *
* sleeping in *
* loving somebody *
* reading a good book / seeing a good movie *
* laughing *
* writing *
* clean sheets *
* shopping for office supplies *
* brainstorming *

Today I was happy about seeing my friends and enjoying ice cream outside in the heat. A perfect, simple night. Right now I'm enjoying some alone-time at home, watching a movie on TV and drinking coke zero (my addiction, btw). Regular coke tastes so weird now :D

Have a happy Friday, everyone. Remember to smile! :)

Happy May: Summer & New Things!

Hi guys!

Ah! I am sorry for totally neglecting my blog and you all for soooo long. This past week I worked for six days, including today, and I hurt my back yesterday morning.. sad face here. It's much better already and I think within a couple of more days I will feel as good as new. Which is perfect, because SUMMER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED TO THE ARCTIC!
I am loving the warm weather, and am so happy I actually get to enjoy it, because I won't be working again until Saturday! Five whole days off! I'm psyched!

Here's an Instagram picture from a few days ago, my hair has gotten so long! Yay!
My plan for the next five days is:
*writing
*enjoying the summer
*see some friends
*clean my apartment (I really have to...)

I do have another reason I haven't been blogging lately, but I can't share too much yet, because nothing is for sure yet... Let's just say I was working on another writing project and it might actually lead to something very exciting! :) I will definitely keep you posted. I don't know much yet, and am hoping to hear something within a week or so.

Other than this my life hasn't been all that exciting lately, same old, same old. I am now cat sitting for my mom, as she is in Brussels for business, and I'm enjoying my time with that cute little hairball<3

I hope you all have had a great week!

I snapped this picture the other night at 11pm. So light outside, I love it!!! :)

Talk to you later!

Happy May: 100 Happy Days Update

I've been doing the 100 Happy Days -challenge for about a month now, and I still have until July 24th to go. I have to say that I'm amazed by how this is easy and hard and wonderful at the same time.

Some days it's easy to find the thing(s) that make me happy. Other days not so much. What's so wonderful, is that there is still something to be happy about in every single day. How great is that? No matter how crappy a day I've had, I still remember this challenge and am forced to find that something, that makes me smile.

I didn't expect to see any results this soon, but I am definitely seeing a change happening in myself. It's so easy to feel sad and depressed nowadays, while being happy can feel like a tough one. I feel blessed, because I can honestly say that I feel happy every day. Not all day every day, but still...  every day.

That is why I am encouraging all of you to take part in the 100 Happy Days Challenge with me!
You can learn more about it here.

Have a happy week, lovelies<3

Happy May

Holla!

It's officially time to say goodbye to April and welcome May! I'm more excited than usual about the beginning of a new month, because I feel April was a little... blah. I guess my expectations were too high. Oh well. Life goes on :)

What happened in April? Um...
*My GoDoFly -story came out
*I took part in two separate entrance exams for two different schools
*I think I complained how nothing's happening

What is going to happen in May?
*I have absolutely no idea.

Anyways, the theme for this month is

Happy May

This month I want to pursue happiness, I want to share tips on how to be happier, and I want to share my 100 Happy Days challenge with you. You can read more about that here and here. So far I've done well, I think, and I have not missed a day! :) I'm sharing pictures of small things and big things that make me happy every day on Instagram and during this month I will be sharing more here, too.

I hope you will all have a wonderful weekend! <3

World Book Day

Happy World Book Day, everyone! :)

How has your week been so far?
I'm so happy because I'm finally done with my school entrance exams! No more studying, life's back to normal again. Unless I actually get to school in the fall! That would be something. I think the exams went well, but I have to wait for the results maybe even until July. I'll keep ya posted ;)

But, returning to the World Book Day, I started a new book today! I'm really trying to read more; lately my reading has suffered big time (studying doesn't count) and that's not good for someone who wants to become a writer.

Anyways, today I started reading Lauren Oliver's new book, Panic.

I've decided to try and read one book a month at least. If I read faster, I'll read more, but unfortunately I don't always have as much time to read as I would like :( adult life sucks at times.

When I'm done reading a book, I will add a review of it into the Books -section you'll find under the top banner (this concerns Blogger only, not Glipho, though all you Gliphers are welcome to go check out my Blogger site as well!)

I hope you're all doing good :) Have a happy Wednesday!

My Favorite Places In the World

I feel I've been very blessed throughout my whole life when it comes to traveling. My parents were big travelers and when they had me and my brother, they had no choice but to take us with them. For that I couldn't be more grateful.

I try to travel at least once a year, and I love sharing my travels with you. So here is a list of my all time favorite places; if you haven't been to these places, I recommend you add them to your list. Seriously, do it. You know you want to ;)

In no particular order:

Portland, Oregon, USA.

I spent three months in this city in the fall of 2012, and I can't even tell you how much I love it. It takes more than just a few days visit to see the wonderful weirdness of Portland, and the people are so incredibly nice, friendly, and proud to live in P-Town. Oregon's amazing nature is of course a perk, and you can see Mt. Hood (in the picture), St. Helen's, Mt. Adams and even Mt. Rainier from certain spots. I miss PDX so much it hurts and can't wait to have the chance to go back! Make sure to visit Voodoo Doughnuts when you go ;)

Seattle, Washington, USA

I don't know why, but I'd always wanted to go to Seattle, ever since I was an early teen, I think. Something about the city just fascinated me. During my stay in Portland I got my chance to visit Seattle a couple of times, and I'm telling you, it did not let me down. I happened to visit on sunny days, but the rain doesn't bother me. Portland gets as much rain, and if anything these cities made me love the rain even more. Seattle has so much to offer; Pike Place Market, the very first Starbucks, Kerry Park (I took this picture from the Kerry Park viewpoint)... I love the hippie atmosphere in the North West.

San Francisco, California, USA

Unfortunately I only got to spend 1 day in San Francisco, but it was enough to blow my mind. This city is just simply beautiful. The houses, the steep hills (seriously steep!!!), Pier 39 + the sea lions... I am so in love with this place and really want to go back for a longer period of time.

Washington, D.C, USA

I've been to D.C. several times, and I love that it's a calm big city. It's easy to get stuck in the Smithsonian area, but I do recommend you check out other parts of the city, too! Smithsonian is great and takes a lot of time, especially if you want to visit the museums (they're free of charge!), so make sure to have enough time to visit this wonderful city! :)

London, England

London never disappoints. No matter how many times I go (been there three times) I always find something new to do and see, and going back to the old places brings me a great joy too. I would be awesome to live in London one day, if I never get the chance to live in the US. London is beautiful, exciting, and lovely :)

Torquay, England

Torquay is located in the South West part of England, and it's known as the English Riviera! It is so beautiful and there's much to do; if my memory serves me right the city has 14 beaches, you can go see a stalactite cave (creepy but interesting), shop till you drop and just relax. There's a cute little village called Cockington between Torquay and Paignton, where you can enjoy a traditional English cream tea. Just don't make the same mistake that I did with my friends, and put the cream in the tea. Stop laughing.

Cairo, Egypt

I admit I'm not currently up to date about how safe it is to travel to Egypt, but if you get a chance, don't miss out on Cairo! It's full of history and so many places to see; make sure to visit Egyptian Museum, have dinner on the Nile, see the pyramids and count the Beatle cars ;) I think I counted 60 when I visited Cairo in 2004. Oh, and while you're in Egypt, make sure to take advantage of the awesome snorkeling possibilities by the Red Sea!

Ok, there's a list of some places I just love :) There are so many more, but I didn't want to make a list that would never end. Hope you enjoyed this!

Have a happy weekend! <3
